O-Space

Foscarini,

2003

Light studied through form and perception.

O-Space was designed in collaboration with Gianpietro Gai for Foscarini in 2003, marking the beginning of a lasting relationship with the Venetian lighting company. It quickly became one of the brand’s most recognizable pieces, admired for sculptural clarity and technical innovation. From its inception, O-Space embodied a contemporary approach that united experimentation, material research, and expressive simplicity within a singular luminous form.

Its compressed oval silhouette, recalling the letter O, establishes dialogue between light and space. A single source at the base casts illumination downward while reflecting into the hollow core above. This interplay activates the interior void, diffusing a delicate glow outward. Rather than merely emitting light, O-Space shapes it, transforming geometry into atmosphere and presence.

Crafted from high-density expanded polyurethane, the body combines fluid curves with structural stability, resulting in a suspended form that feels solid yet weightless. The tactile surface and continuous outline suggest movement even in stillness. Concealed wiring and an innovative diffusion system reflect careful engineering, merging emotional warmth with technical precision in a seamless architectural gesture.

Developed through extensive material experimentation, O-Space introduced rigid polyurethane foam into Foscarini’s production for the first time. Originally conceived as a sphere, it evolved into its distinctive flattened profile through refinement. More than a fixture, O-Space remains a spatial experience, exploring boundaries between structure and void, light and perception.
